Laos

A slow boat took us from the border with Thailand over the mekong river to the jungle city Luang prabang.

Who knew that we would land in french boutique town, filled with chique hotels and fancy shops. Developed by the money mostly japanese tourists bring in, Luang prabang thrives since the opening of the international airport there.

It’s a city in great contrast with the rest of Laos , with what we saw of it anyway.

We followed Laos only major road south to Vang Vieng, a village in a beautiful mountain setting that is build around a US airstrip from the Vietnam war .

In the capital Vientiane we found another reminder of the war. The COPE centre , here they help people who got handicaped mostly by encounters with unexploded bombs. In Laos they still have 80 million of them lying around in the countryside.

That also explains why Laos has such a bad road system, being  a road worker ,a farmer or a child playing is potentially deadly in Laos.

Because it is hard to get of that one main road, especially with a child, we were in and out of Laos in 8 days. As we saw from the boat and through the car window it is a beautiful country that is mainly untouched, lets hope it’s stays that way and hope that the people of Laos can build a future for themselves.
